This semester in school I'm taking AP Studio Art and this is where I'll share my photos that will go in my portfolio.
In September I went to a concert and I was introduced to the band The Garden. The Garden is a music duo that consists of 2 twin brothers. I was immediately intrigued by their music and styles. Both of the twins (Wyatt and Fletcher Shears) have very feminine clothing styles and also have a “jester” or “clown” motif that they say represents their goal which is to entertain. The Garden doesn't like to fit themselves in a genre- they made up one called “Vada Vada”. Vada Vada means to be creative in whatever way you want and to not define yourself in a category. The music of this band really inspires me and so does their message. The name The Garden came from the concept of continual growth and I feel like that applies to music as well as photography.
The topic I chose for my concentration is Ambiguity. Ambiguity to me means something could look a certain way but truly be something else. That’s not the exact definition- the real google definition is “the quality of being open to more than one interpretation; inexactness.” This relates to my interest in The Garden with clowns for example, they paint their face to look happy or sad permanently or people that crossdress, a male would wear female clothing or a female would wear male clothing. Ambiguity is what makes clowns and people in masks so creepy to humans because we don’t know what’s truly behind the mask or face paint. I can use this theme in my photos by photographing males in female clothing, females in male clothing, people in masks, clown makeup, regular makeup, people that are doing a hobby but wearing incorrect attire, a place with a false sign or an item with a false label. I want to interpret some of these concepts in a creepy way and a beautiful way. I want to explore photoshop and editing to make my photos more unique. My inspirations for editing and photography are Petra Collins, Jesse Herzog and Daniel Regan.
I will update this page twice a month or when I finish my concentration for the month.
